Best Online Watch Store: Expert Ratings and Buying Advice

Are you in the market for a new watch? Then you’re probably wondering what is the best online watch store? If you’re like some people, you might want to go the traditional route and shop at a physical watch retailer. And while this has been the standard way of purchasing watches in the past, it’s becoming easier and more cost-effective buy a watch online. The good and bad thing about buying timepieces online is that there are so many online retailers to choose from. So, where do you start? To help you out, we’ve spent hours upon hours researching a huge variety of online watch retailers to determine who’s the best and why. We looked at:

  1. Shipping times
  2. Return policies
  3. Product selection so you can form the most well-rounded opinion of each of these stores and experience the best watch-buying process.
  4. We even considered overall customer service because we know just how impersonal shopping online can be. The customer service department can make or break the experience, and we understand the importance of good customer service, both when there are problems and when there aren’t.
Before we jump into our list of the best online watch stores, it’s also important to understand why buying online is superior. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons using the web to buy a watch is the best way.

Why Buying a Watch Online is Best

Online watch stores offer a wide variety of benefits over their physical counterparts. While both venues sell watches for the same purpose, they do things drastically different. Here are the pros online stores provide: Convenience - It’s no question that shopping online is much more convenient than visiting a physical storefront. Instead of getting dressed and driving somewhere likely far away, you can buy whatever you need from the comfort of your own home with the simple click of a button. No amount of human interaction can beat that, right? Price - Online watch prices tend to be much lower than those you can find in typical watch stores, which is another huge draw to purchasing from online stores. You can typically also find more sales online, which only leads to more savings for you. Selection - If you’re looking for a specific style of watch and it isn’t available in the store you’re shopping at, you’re pretty much out of luck, unless the shop owners can special order something for you. Of course, this means you’ll need to wait even longer to get your new timepiece. Online stores have a large selection, giving you a higher chance of getting what you want.

The Best Online Watch Stores

You can buy watches from any number of online watch stores, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be getting a good deal or a reliable watch from just any online shop. You should take as much care researching options on the internet as you would choosing a store in the real world. We’ve taken some of the research out of your hands to make your shopping experience easier and more convenient. After analyzing over 20 different online watch stores, we’ve listed out our top 5 choices. Let’s take a look.

#1 Overstock.com

Product Selection Overstock.com has a ton of watches for sale. The website has over 80 pages of product, including both smart watches and traditional models. With such a large selection, you might think that it would be difficult to find what you’re looking for, but Overstock.com has also provided comprehensive search and filtering features to help you find the perfect watch. Overstock carries most major watch brands, and even dabbles in some of the luxury brands, including pre-owned Rolexes. Return Policy If you receive a defective or otherwise unacceptable watch from Overstock.com, you can return it within 30-days for a full refund. Interestingly enough, you can still return a watch after 30 days, but you won’t receive a full refund. Instead, the website will give you a partial refund, based on the idea that products depreciate in value over time. Shipping Overstock.com is based in the United States and offers free shipping on any order over $45, which is a unique benefit we didn’t find at other online retailers. Most other online retailers will run specials where certain dollar amounts will give you free shipping, but Overstock always has free shipping over $45. If you’re in the U.S., you can expect to wait 1-2 business days before Overstock fulfills the order, but actual shipping time varies greatly depending on the specific product. In general, you can expect to wait 5-10 business days total before you get your new watch. This is pretty standard in the online shopping world. Customer Service If you have any questions or issues about your watch order, you can always reach out to Overstock’s customer service department via phone, text message, 24/7 online chat, email or email. We tested several methods and found that in most instances, customer service was quick to respond. International support isn’t as strong as U.S. support, and the international customer service reps can’t help fix international orders as much as the U.S.-based reps. Overall, Overstock’s customer service is strong, but they struggle with many of the same things as other major online retailers. Bottom Line Overstock offers a huge variety of watches, often for discounted prices, and gets them to you fairly quickly. While their customer support could be a little more helpful, you don’t have to jump through a million hoops to get connected to a representative. Overall, Overstock is a great choice.

#2 World of Watches

Product Selection As their name suggests, World of Watches offers the biggest variety of watches on our list. With over 15,000 different watches to choose from, you won’t walk away from this online retailer without something in hand that you like. You can buy low-end and luxury watches for steeply discounted prices, and the company’s mantra seems to be “New Styles Added Daily/Weekly!” Brand availability is also impressive. World of Watches carries most major low-end and luxury watch brands. Return Policy - World of Watches offers a standard 30-day return policy for a full refund. However, you will be charged an 8% restocking fee for any watch return over $4,000, unless you exchange your purchase for something of equal or greater value. If you need to return a watch outside of the 30-day window, you’ll need to get supervisory approval and may be subject to that same restocking fee, regardless of your original price of purchase. Shipping You have several different shipping options available to you via World of Watches, starting at $5.99 and ranging up to $49.99 for Saturday delivery. While the company says you should expect to receive your watch between 1-7 business days after placing your order, we’ve found actual shipping time to be closer to 7-10 business days after our testing. World of Watches offers free economy shipping on orders over $100, which shouldn’t be too hard to meet when buying watches. You can get discounted ground shipping on orders over $100, as well. Customer Service If you need to contact World of Watches for any reason, you can reach out via phone, email or online chat. Where some other online retailers offer 24/7 support, World of Watches limits their customer service department’s availability, which can sometimes make it difficult to get support. Actual customer service is reliable and decent. We didn’t find any major problems during our testing, even during the returns process, which is where most things seem to go wrong with the customer service department. Bottom Line World of Watches offers the biggest selection of watches you can find online, and all for a great price. While their return policy and shipping times aren’t the greatest, especially when you consider high restocking fees, the sheer amount of product is hard to beat. If you can’t find your desired style anywhere else, don’t forget to check these guys out.

#3 Authentic Watches

Product Selection Authentic Watches has a good number of watches on their website, but it isn’t nearly as large as what other online stores offer. However, this does help with product discovery, and you may find it easier to narrow down results to find a time piece that you like. Like other online watch retailers, Authentic Watches includes both low-end and luxury brand on their website. You can also search for “rare and unique” watches, which is a unique feature that most other online stores don’t offer. If you’re looking for something different, you should stop at Authentic Watches first. Return Policy You can return your watch to Authentic Watches within a standard 30-day return policy, but there are a lot of hoops to jump through to get your watch returned here. First, Authentic Watches requires you to fill out a Return Merchandise Authorization form (found on their website) to get an RMA number assigned to your case (which expires after 5 days). You can only return unworn merchandise, and the retailer tries to enforce this as much as possible. Authentic Watches charges a 10% restocking fee, with a minimum fee of $50, which is much higher than many of the other retailers we reviewed and tested. Shipping This online store has a leg up on other retailers’ shipping policies. If you place your order before 12pm Pacific Time, you’ll receive same-day shipping, which is a huge benefit. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll receive the product next day. Depending on where you’re at, your watch can still take a couple days to get to you. If you place an order over $500, however, you’ll receive free overnight shipping, which is another amazing benefit, especially if you’re shopping last minute. Customer Service You can only reach out to Authentic Watch’s customer service department via phone or email, and only then during limited hours. We found it fairly difficult to get in touch with an actual representative, but once we got connected, the actual service itself wasn’t horrible. Bottom Line With a restrictive return policy and hard-to-reach customer service department, Authentic Watches isn’t our first choice for online watch stores. However, if you’re in the market for unique timepieces, you can probably find something worth buying on the website for a good price.

#4 The Watchery

Product Selection The Watchery has a fairly large selection of watches available on their website, but don’t expect to find anything under $100. This online watch store solely features luxury brands. As such, you might find the product selection limited, especially if you’re on a budget. However, for luxury watches, this is a wide spread of products and you won’t be disappointed to know that The Watchery carries most of the popular styles from these luxury brands. Return Policy This watch store abides by a strict 30-day return policy. Where other online retailers offer smaller returns for purchases outside 30 days, The Watchery cuts that option off once you hit the 30-day mark. A 6% restocking fee only applies to special orders over $4,000, which is to be expected and not outside of normal bounds for an online watch store. Shipping Times Standard shipping is free with all purchases at The Watchery, and you can expect to receive your new timepiece after 1-7 business days. When we tested standard shipping, we found that to be a reasonable time frame. Of course, you have options for expedited shipping at various prices. Free shipping on any order is a great deal, especially since you are paying a pretty penny for the luxury brand watches.  Customer Service You can contact The Watchery’s customer service representatives via online form, live chat or phone. None of these are 24/7 options, which can limit you during times you need support the most, but that isn’t uncommon in the online watch industry. When we contacted The Watchery’s customer service department, we were pleased at their quick response times and general knowledge. They were kind and helpful each time, even with difficult questions. Bottom Line The Watchery specializes in luxury brands, and we recommend them if you’re looking specifically for discounted luxury watches. While their overall selection is limited, you won’t be hard pressed to find something you like on the site.

#5 Ashford

Product Selection Ashford has a decent selection of both lower-priced and luxury watches. With around 3,000 different watches on the site, you’re sure to find something to fit your needs and budget. Ashford also offers a unique option in purchasing pre-owned watches. This isn’t something you typically find on other online watch stores, but it gives you the option to find something more expensive for a much lower price. Ashford’s pre-owned watches are certified in-house and carry a 1-year guarantee and warranty, making them a safe bet even for doubtful shoppers. Return Policy This online watch retailer follows the industry-standard 30-day return policy for new items. If you’ve purchased a pre-owned watch, however, you only have a 14-day return policy. Ashford requires you to have not worn the watch in order to receive a full refund, which is kind of limiting. Of course, it can be difficult to determine if you’ve actually worn the watch unless you’ve damaged it, making this a hard policy to enforce. Shipping Times Ashford offers free ground shipping on all orders within the continental United States, which is a great benefit. When we tested Ashford’s shipping times, we found that most orders with free shipping took 7-10 business days to get to us. Of course, you have the option of paying more to get your new watch faster. Customer Service If you need help with one of your orders, you can reach out to customer service through phone, chat and email channels. They also have a bunch of different international support options, which is helpful if you’re outside of the U.S. None of these options are 24/7, which was a bummer. When we contacted Ashford’s customer support department, we waited longer than expected to get connected to a representative, but the overall wait wasn’t bad. Ashford is a relatively small company, and longer wait times are to be expected. The representatives we talked to were helpful and nice, and we didn’t have any problems getting the answers we needed. Bottom Line Ashford is a great online watch retailer that offers free shipping on all orders and a helpful customer service department. Product selection isn’t as large as other online stores, but their pre-owned watches section is truly unique and a great choice for those on a budget.

Orbit B-hyve Smart Hose Faucet Timer Review

I would be willing to bet that most of the water that gets wasted in our homes comes from the garden hose. Whether you’re spraying off the deck, power washing the house or watering the garden, there’s really no smart way to slow the water down. You just spray and do your thing. However, there is a smarter way. The Orbit B-hyve Smart Hose Faucet Timer makes your hose smart.

Water Your Garden The Smart Way

It can be controlled via Wi-Fi from anywhere in the world. That means that if you have an irrigation system, you could schedule your garden to be watered for 5 minutes, while you are on vacation in France sipping wine and sampling the local cuisine. Pros: Easy to install and use Works with Amazon Alexa Basic hose and faucet setup Cons: App lacks customization options for plant types Needs more settings The Orbit B-hyve has a sleek design and weatherproof housing, so it’s built to last. B-hyve lets you control any standard hose faucet right from your smartphone. It’s easy to set up and easy to use. Real-time weather updates help you to create the perfect watering schedule for your needs. You can even schedule rain delays, and get detailed reports on the system’s performance and your savings. It even works with Amazon’s Alexa. You don’t have to do a thing to water your garden thanks to Smart WeatherSense which gets local weather data and automatically adjusts your Orbit B-hyve to deliver the right amount of water to your plants. You didn’t have to lift a finger. You can even connect your timers thanks to B-hyve Network Meshing so that each B-hyve extends the signal from your Wi-Fi network to your entire system. This increases the total range. With features like this, the Orbit B-hyve Smart Hose Faucet Timer is a great smart home product. You already have your smart thermostat, your smart lock, home security and other smart home devices inside of your house. This is a home automation device that helps to take care of the outside.

No More Wasting Water

Bottom Line It’s a pretty decent solution for watering your plants on a schedule and we love how easy it is to use and install. Anyone can get it up and running quickly. We do wish that it offered more custom options for various plant types since they don’t all do well with the same amount of water. If this is your first smart watering gadget you can’t go wrong with it, others might want something with more features.

Wiser Smart Heating System Review

Drayton, one of the leading brands in the UK domestic heating market has an interesting solution for those homes with radiator heating. We tend to think of radiator heating as somehow being outdated, but many homes around the world still use this form of heating. And now you can update your heating and integrate it with the rest of your home automation system. The Wiser smart heating system keeps things simple and makes it easier for you to control the heating in your home no matter where you are.

Control Every Room Easily

Wiser is an affordable multi-room smart heating control system that offers flexible heating zones in up to 16 rooms of a home. You’ll get better energy efficiency and comfort with this system installed. Wiser is easy to install and you can program each room to the temperature you want while saving money. Pros: Excellent value Simple control Cons: The app could be better The system is comprised of four parts: the thermostat, radiator thermostat, heat hub, and the app. Through the app, you can remotely control heating across all of your rooms. The company also launched the Wiser Plug, which is a smart plug that allows you to control up to ten appliances. Wiser works along with your existing heating system and home automation setup, so you won’t have to change or alter any pipework or valves. It’s easy for most people to install. Everyone loves the money-saving aspect of smart devices like this, but it’s also pretty great to be able to have the infant’s room at one temp and the living room at another. I love that you get greater control over each zone. Plus, the system is compatible smart voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. So you have voice control so that you can adjust temps no matter what you are doing.

Controlling Your Heating Has Never Been Easier

Bottom Line The best thing about this system is how easy it is. Add in the fact that it’s affordable and you have a big winner for anyone who wants multi-room heating control on a budget. It does what it says and it’s pretty effortless. Forget your older thermostats and go with a smart system like this.

Sling TV Review: Is It Worth It?

Sling TV is one of the first companies to explore the world of live TV streaming without a cable company. The company has struggled to catch on in recent times, especially when compared to Netflix or Hulu, but it is slowly gaining momentum. If you’re looking to lower your cable bill or satellite TV bill, you can’t go wrong with Sling TV. It offers a good number of channels packages and extra features without breaking the bank. Check out our Sling TV review below to learn more about the service and how well it fits with your budget and needs.

Sling TV Packages and Pricing

If there’s one thing that’s true about TV packages, it’s that they’re overly complicated and expensive. With three simple and affordable pricing packages and a variety of add-ons, Sling TV is different. You can purchase the Sling Blue package, Sling Orange package or Sling Orange + Sling Blue package. The main difference between these packages are the number and selection of channels available. Let’s take a look at the differences. Sling Orange (this package gives you the least amount of channels)
  • It costs $25 per month and only gives you 29+ channels.
  • However, be aware that the channels you get with Sling Orange are typically the more popular or “premium” channels, including Disney channels, ESPN and more. Sling Orange only allows you to stream on one device at a time, including mobile devices.
Sling Blue
  • This package also costs $25 per month, but it includes almost double the number of channels that Sling Blue provides.
  • There is some overlap between the channel list, but Sling Blue offers channels like Fox and NBC, SyFy and FXX.
  • Sling Blue allows you to stream on two devices at a time, including mobile devices.
Sling Orange + Sling Blue
  • This package gives you everything that the Orange and Blue package provide
  • With the exception of allowing you to up to four simultaneous streams, one on Sling Blue channels and three on Sling Orange channels.
As with most online TV streaming services, you’ll be required to enter credit card information in order to pay on an automatically renewing subscription. If you’re worried about getting charged, be sure to cancel before the renewal date.

Sling TV Extras and Add Ons

Like many other cable services, Sling TV offers a variety of extras and add-ons that can enhance your viewing experience, especially if there are programs that are more enjoyable when watched live, like sports or the latest Game of Thrones episodes. Sling TV has compiled different add-on packages based on content categories, like News, Comedy or Sports. If you’re looking for sports extras, you can purchase Sling TV’s sports add-on package for only $5 per month, which includes an extra 13 sports-specific channels like NBA TV, NHL Network and more. You can also purchase a variety of premium channels like HBO, Showtime and Cinemax for an extra monthly cost. Related: Sling TV also offers an extra DVR service that allows you to record your favorite shows when you aren’t home so you can still enjoy them when you have time. The good thing about Sling’s DVR is that it’s all stored in the cloud, meaning you won’t have to purchase a special device for storing your recorded shows. The bad thing is that you can only store 50 hours worth of content before Sling starts automatically deleting old content.

Sling User Experience

Using Sling TV should be easy, but it has somewhat of a steep learning curve. This can ruin your first impression, but with some practice, you’ll get used to the little quirks. The Sling TV app features a dark interface, with bright orange lines under shows you’re currently watching to indicate how far into the episode or movie you are. Unfortunately, the rewind and fast-forward functionality is lacking, and we found the entire interface to be more glitchy than it should have been for a modern streaming service, even on a solid internet connection. You can access Sling TV on almost any streaming device, including Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Chromecast or Sling TV’s own $100 AirTV player, among others.

How Does Sling Stack Up vs. Other Streaming Services?

Overall, Sling TV offers a solid and mostly reliable live TV streaming service, but how does it stack up to the competition? When compared to major competitors like PlayStation Vue, YouTube TV, Hulu, DirectTV Now and others, Sling pretty much holds its own. It’s still the cheapest option out there, but that means it suffers in the kind of channel selection it offers. The more expensive services offer more channels without the need to pay more for premium channels like HBO. Related: One area where Sling TV excels is the sheer number of add-ons and extras you can purchase to create a truly customizable TV viewing experience. If you like news, you can buy the News package. If you like sports, buy the Sports package. This customization is a great feature that you’ll be hard-pressed to find somewhere else. The cloud DVR functionality is also unique to Sling TV, and gives you more flexibility in the way you watch your favorite programs.

Is Sling TV for You?

So, is Sling TV the right choice for you? The answer depends largely on your TV channel preferences and individual budget, but you can’t go wrong with ultra-affordable, live TV. Sling TV excels when you think of it as the budget choice that won’t give you everything your heart desires in a single package. It’s great for what it is, especially when compared to more expensive services. However, that doesn’t mean that Sling TV is without its share of downsides and problems. The Sling TV app is buggy enough to be annoying, and you might get frustrated at the relatively small 50 GB of DVR storage, especially if you’re always missing your shows. You’ll need a Wi Fi connection of at least 25 mbps to get the best viewing experience, which may be out of your price range. All in all, Sling TV is a reliable TV streaming service with a good selection of content from which to choose. Sure, there are more options out there, but can they beat $25 per month?

Best Time of Year to Buy Appliances: When to Buy and When to Wait

Buying major home appliances can be an expensive ordeal, and it can cause more headache than excitement. There are hundreds of options on the market for any given large appliance. Taking the time to research each one and compare prices to find the best deal can be overwhelming. So, what is the best time to buy appliances? If you buy at the right time, you can be sure to save money in the long run. We researched all the ins and outs of buying appliances. Our research included comparing prices of the highest-selling models throughout the year to find out when you should buy.

When NOT to Buy Appliances

Before we jump into learning about the best times to buy, it’s important to understand when NOT to buy a new appliance. This can be just as important when it comes to saving you money and stress. Don’t buy the brand-new model right when it releases. Manufacturers are almost guaranteed to reduce prices in the months following the release, especially during the times listed below. If you want the new model, be patient and wait for a sale. Related: Don’t wait to buy a new appliance until you have no other choice. Many people wait until their fridges or air conditioners die completely before even thinking about purchasing a new one. If you put yourself in a situation where you have an emergency need, you can bet that you won’t want to wait until a deal comes around. You also lose your bargaining power, which means you lose out on more money from your credit card overall. Now that you know when not to buy, let’s take a look at the best times of the year to get that new microwave or range.

Holiday Weekends Are a Great Time to Buy an Appliance

By far, holiday weekends are the best time to purchase a new appliance. Retailers love dropping prices just to get more people into their stores. Keep your eye on Labor Day, Memorial Day and President’s Day weekend sales. Stores usually send out their sale ads in the weeks before the sales start so you can get a good idea of what prices are going to be before you even leave the house. Don’t forget about Black Friday, either! The day after Thanksgiving is one of the craziest shopping days of the year, but for good reason. The best deals of the year happen during this time, but most people focus on purchasing consumer goods like TVs or smartphones. If you’re lucky, you might be able to skip the line and save thousands on a new fridge or washer and dryer combo. The only downside about shopping the holiday weekends for new appliances are the crowds. A relaxing day off work may be full of fighting crowds and limited quantities instead. However, the savings are worth it for that extra home improvement.

When a New Model is Released

As we mentioned above, buying a new model right when it’s released is one of the worst times to buy. However, this time frame can still work to your advantage if you set your sights on last year’s model. When a manufacturer releases a new model, the old model will lower in price almost instantaneously. Retailers want to be sure to clear out of their old stock to make room for the shiny new models that will arrive shortly after the announcements from manufacturers. Keep in mind that you may need to do a little extra research on sites like Amazon, eBay, consumer reports and so on if you’re going to approach your purchase from this direction. For the most part, new models don’t introduce a ton of new features that are must-haves, especially when compared to the last generation. Many of these are minor improvements that come with major price tags. Unless there’s some feature on the new model that you absolutely need to have, it’s likely you’ll do just fine with the old version.

The End of the Month

The end of the month is another great time to purchase major appliances, but for reasons you may not realize. It isn’t that there are any extra sales or a country-wide mandate to lower prices at the end of the month. Did you know that most appliances salespeople work on commission? This means they have sales quotas they need to meet every month. You can use this knowledge to your advantage. At the end of the month, many salespeople are eager to meet their sales goals and are willing to bargain more than usual to move product out the door. If you take this approach, be prepared to bargain. You’ll need to negotiate in order to get the best deal. This can be difficult for some people, but if you do it well, you can get a killer deal on a new appliance. To prepare for your negotiations and bargaining, study up on standard pricing for the model you’re looking to buy, and don’t forget to compare the prices other stores are offering. You may also want to see if you can purchase a display model or something from the scratch-and-dent section to knock off a few more dollars.

The Best Months to Buy an Appliance

The best months to buy appliances is closely related to a point we’ve already covered above: when a new model releases. Most appliance manufacturers follow a strict schedule when it comes to new product releases. You can pretty much predict when a new model is going to be released, therefore knowing when the best months to buy actually are. Most manufacturers unveil and release new products in September and October. The only exception is for refrigerators, which are released on a summer schedule, meaning May is the time to buy a new fridge. Like car dealerships, January is also a good time to buy new appliances. Stores are looking to clear their floors of all the “old” product to make room for the new year’s offerings. This is also the time they sell through any leftover inventory from Black Friday and Christmas sales.

Final Thoughts

You can shop the sales and you can bargain for better prices at the end of the month, but if you buy a model that you don’t love, you may end up with a healthy dose of buyer’s remorse. While it’s important to know when the best time of year to buy appliances is, it’s also of utmost importance that you do your research before you buy. Take the time to research different models and manufacturers. Measure the pros and cons of your top picks and get familiar with their standard pricing. That way when sales come around, you know just how good of a deal you’re getting. If you go about your purchase in the right way, you’ll maximize your savings and go home with a brand new appliance that you love.

Last Chance: Verizons $400 off Pixel 3 XL Galaxy S9for Black Friday

For this Black Friday, Verizon Wireless is offering a pretty amazing deal on brand new flagship Android smartphones. $400 off the phone of your choice, with no trade-in required! You’ll find everything from the premium Google Pixel 3 XL to the Samsung Galaxy S9+ qualifying. This deal ends in less than 12 hours, so you’ll need to act fast. Here are the details. Pick an Android smartphone of your choice from a list of 22 selection. Pay for the device and the $400 discount will be applied to your account over a 24 month period. If you transfer the line or terminate your contract with Verizon Wireless, the promotional credit will end. This means you’ll receive about $16.67 off your monthly bill for the next 2 years. Noteworthy qualifying phones:

  • Google Pixel 3 XL
  • Google Pixel 3
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 9
  • Samsung Galaxy S9+
  • Samsung Galaxy S9
  • LG V40 ThinQ
…and many older models. Considering the Google Pixel 3 XL is currently discounted by $200 on Google Store for $699, this $400 discount is twice the savings. (The smaller Pixel 3 is on sale for $150 off). As for the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, the next non-Black Friday related sale price is $779 at Amazon, while the S9+ has a similar $200 off discount to the Pixel 3 XL, making the phone only $639.99. As for the LG V40, the next best offer online is also a $200 discount down to $749.99. With Verizon’s $400 off Black Friday deal, the best phone to apply this towards is the Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3, Galaxy Note 9, or LG V40 to get the maximum value. Everything else is simply older and won’t yield the best bang for your buck - especially considering the $400 discount is spread across a 24 month period. Best Online Mattress Stores in 2018 (Bed in a Box)

Traditionally, the only way to shop for the best mattress was to head out to a store and start plopping yourself down on bed after bed until you found one that felt right for you. There’s nothing wrong with this method, but a lot has changed in recent years with “bed-in-a-box” online shopping. Now we have a number of online mattress stores with unique, interesting ways of helping you find the right mattress…and a lot of great deals on purchases and shipping. But if you’ve never thought about shopping for a mattress online before, you may be feeling some stress at the idea: where do you begin? What site is the best to buy a mattress on? We’re going to help you out by pinpointing the best online mattress stores around, what makes them worth checking out, and everything else you need to know when looking for the best reviewed mattress on the market. Note: Are you looking for the best time to buy a mattress? Fall and early winter are often excellent times to look, because there are a lot of deals going on at this time. The opposite end of the year, around early summer, may also be a good choice, since mattress stores often try to get rid of a lot of merchandise around this time.

#1  Helix

Pros:
  • Excellent shopping method
  • Good customization options
Cons:
  • Mattresses are generally more expensive than competitors
Helix is trying to re-invent the way you shop for mattresses, and it’s impressive. First, you take a quiz that asks about your body, your sleep position, how firm you like your mattress, what your sleeping partner prefers, and other key questions. Then Helix makes a suggestion for a mattress customized specifically for you with a variety of features like body contouring, different levels of support, sleep zones, mattress “feel” and more. These mattresses generally start at $1,000. Helix also offers free shipping, free returns, and a 100-night return window for you to make up your mind about whether or not you like the mattress. That’s just about the best you can hope for on any mattress website, and allows you to undo your decision if the mattress just doesn’t work out.

#2  Casper

Pros:
  • More choices than most online sites
  • Easy to buy any bedroom accessories, too
Cons:
  • Mattresses may have too many layers for some shoppers
Casper is a highly reliable hybrid foam mattress site designed to make picking out a mattress easy. It starts off with an easy choice – three layers, four layers, or five layers of foam? From here you can go on to pick the right size and choose other features like a foundation and adjustable base. You also buy other bedroom furniture there, including beds, nightstands, and other important components. Prices for a mattress range from several hundred dollars to over $2,000 based on what you’re getting. It’s a welcome, simple process, but what really makes Casper shine are the guarantees. Both shipping and returns are free, and you get a 100-night “trial” to see how well you like the mattress before choosing to buy it, a great addition that you should look for in any online mattress company, because sometimes you just don’t know how a mattress will feel. Mattresses also come with a 10-year limited warranty.

#3  Leesa

Pros:
  • High-quality, mainstream foam mattresses
  • Great nonprofit and eco-friendly involvement
Cons:
  • A little expensive for the product
Leesa makes your mattress choices both simple and affordable. You can pick the Leesa foam mattress, starting at $525, or the extra-support Sapira mattress, starting at $995. They are both great choices for those looking for a smaller mattress on a budget, and for people who don’t necessarily need the extra-layered options that companies like Casper offer. Additionally, Leesa has a big focus on nonprofit activity and eco-friendly work. They donate one out of every ten mattresses they sell, plant one tree for every mattress they sell, and generally spend a lot of time supporting over 1,000 nonprofits around the country. That makes them a perfect fit if you like to support others with your big purchases. Finally, Leesa also offers the top-tier 100-night free trial and free shipping and returns, which is always nice to see.

#4  Tuft and Needle

Pros:
  • Very affordable mattresses
  • Unique foam mixture, plus graphite cooling gel
Cons:
  • Beds may be too firm for some buyers
Tuft and Needle is another burgeoning online mattress store with a unique approach to service, and specialization in very affordable memory foam mattresses, with prices that start at just $350 for a basic twin mattress and rising to only $750 for the top king-sized model. The company uses its own foam mixture, plus graphite and cooling gel to help the bed feel more comfortable and help keep you cool. These are simple, firm beds, by design. Tuft and Needle prides itself on skipping all the frills and providing no-nonsense mattresses that are likely to appeal more to younger buyers. Like many others on our list, the company offers a 100 night free trial, a 10-year limited warranty, and free returns (with the promise that the mattress will be donated to charity when returned).

#5  Allswell

Pros:
  • Foam and coil mattresses for more traditional products
  • Most affordable mattresses online
Cons:
  • Product availability can be hit or miss
Allswell uses a combination of foam and coil support for its mattresses, an ideal option if you prefer more traditional mattresses and aren’t a fan of layers and layers of foam. Their website is particularly excellent, offering full information on mattress materials, videos on how to set up your mattress, and other useful features. The mattresses themselves (divided into two different classes) are very affordable, starting at around $295 for a twin and not rising above $1,000 for a king. In addition to the 100-night trial and the 10-year limited warranty, the company also offers their own option setup and mattress removal services. However, one problem is that Allswell’s low-cost mattresses are popular – which can affect availability, especially at busy times of the year. That means that popular sizes, like queen, may not be available in the class of mattress that you want, which can be frustrating if you don’t want to wait.

#6  Bear

Pros:
  • You get to try advanced mattress materials different from many options on the market
  • Targeted at fitness lovers who want comfort and recovery
Cons:
  • Some claims are scientifically silly
  • Prices can be high
Bear has a very unique offering for a specific segment of the mattress market – fitness fans who want the latest in mattress materials. The company offers a Bear and Bear Hybrid mattress (the hybrid is thicker and uses springs, but that’s the main difference). The mattresses use graphite-gel memory foam, smart fabrics for support layers, and other tricks designed to help athletes recover quickly and sleep better. Unfortunately, there’s also some severe pseudoscience, like “infrared therapy” claims (aka, materials that feel cool) that are mostly nonsense, despite the FDA labels. Ignore this, and focus on the real sleeping benefits instead. Bear’s mattresses are also pricier than many of our picks, starting at $540 - $1350 and rising quickly after that. Fortunately, for those who want to try the latest experimental mattress materials still have a 100 night trial and full refund option for returning the product.

Buying Guide

Return Policies
  • Return policies should always offer free returns within the trial period once the mattress is bought. As long as you ship the mattress back within this window, you should be able to get a full refund. After all, you’re buying a mattress design online – you should be to return it free of cost if something doesn’t work out.
  • Make sure you read return policies carefully to see if there are any caveats or requirements for making returns…there usually are.
Shipping
  • You are buying an expensive, heavy item online, and shipping costs shouldn’t be a consideration. Every mattress site worth visiting will offer you free shipping for your purchase. If they don’t, it’s probably all a scam anyway.
Advice
  • A mattress site that walks you through the decision process is very valuable. Watch for tips, tests, explanations, and other information that can help you make the right purchase.
  • Helix’s mattress quiz is a great example of this, but other stores also have very helpful resources, articles, and descriptions that can lead you in the right direction.
Customization
  • How much can you customize your mattress? Online customization options are limited, but they are still better than picking a mattress from a store.
  • Look for options to choose the type, size, and feel of the mattress padding used. Accessories aren’t nearly as important, because you can get them anywhere, but the ability to choose different mattress features is a great sign.
Other Reviews
  • Always look at online reviews! Be careful of the reviews on the site itself: these can offer insight, but they may also be curated. Instead, search for reviews on other sites and on social media to see what people think.
  • What mattresses do others like? What was their buying experience like? How did they feel about shipping and returns? These points can provide you with valuable information!

FAQs for Buying Mattresses

What About Installation? Generally speaking, online services are less likely to offer installation and “take away the old mattress” services than store chains. However, some do! Always look at the shipping information for specific details. However, be careful with this step: Suppose, during your 100-night free trial, you decide to return the mattress. That leaves you with zero mattresses to sleep on until you get another, which could create a budget crunch or some uncomfortable sleeping periods. How Long Should I Wait Before Sending the Mattress Back? You don’t have to wait for any specific period of time. However, mattress companies suggest you give it at least 30 days. The reason is that it may take some time for your body to adjust to a new sleeping experience, and for your spine/muscles to adjust to the point where you find out if it makes any difference. So, if you can, try to give it at least a few weeks before you decide. Is There Any Way I Can Try Out an Online Mattress? Not usually. Some large online stores, like Casper, also have a few stores around the country where you can go in and check out a mattress, so it’s worth a quick search. But it’s not often a possibility. This is where the free trial period comes in handy. If you have very special needs for a mattress, it may be better to avoid buying online. I’m Worried About a New Mattress Smell, Is This Going to Be an  Issue? Generally, new mattress smells are nothing to worry about. Packaging materials and the mattress production process can indeed leave a mattress smelling a little plastic-like or strange. That smell does not continue! After several days, it should be dissipated, so be patient and let it happen. If you have the time, you may want to unwrap the mattress and just leave it sitting for a while to help with this process. Putting sheets on right away will only make the issue worse. Is a Hard Mattress Really Better? Science goes back and forth on this issue, but currently the best answer is: No. The best mattress for the average sleeper are able to conform to your body so that your shoulders and spine don’t have to get twisted into unnatural shapes and stay that way. More cushioning is better, because it gives you body room to relax into a more normal alignment. Of course, too much cushioning can cause similar problems to hard beds, and should be avoided. Finding the sweet spot can be a challenge, so it’s important to take a look at what each mattress version offers. If you have back issues, ask your doctor for which option would be best for you. Can My Old Bed Frame Support the New Mattress? Generally, yes, if the frame is intended for a mattress of that size (twin, full, queen, etc.). If the mattress appears to be significantly heavier, you may want to consider a new frame, but it isn’t usually necessary.

Best Kayak for Beginners in 2018 Kayak Reviews & Buying Guide

If you’re new to the world of kayaking, you might be overwhelmed with the sheer number of kayaks there are available on the market. On top of that, you might not even know what to look for in a kayak. To get you started on finding the option that’s best for you, we’ve researched and reviewed the best kayaks for beginners. We waded through 25 different kayaks, testing stability, space and usability. After hours of testing and more dips in the water than we’d like to admit, we landed on the Ocean Kayak Scrambler 11 as the best kayak for beginners for 2018. This boat offers comfortable seating and greater stability so you feel confident on the water. Out of all the hobbies you can choose to fill your free time, kayaking has become one of the more popular options. It gives you an opportunity to reconnect with nature and meet new people. Choosing the right kayak to fit your needs and budget is important to get the most out of this fulfilling activity. Check out our list of the other top kayaks below, as well as our kayak buying guide for beginners, which outlines some of the most critical features you should consider when making your choice.

The Best Kayaks for Beginners of 2018

#1 Ocean Kayak Scrambler 11 – Best Overall Kayak for Beginners

Pros:
  • Extra-stable design makes it easy to use in the water
  • Included dry storage gives you room to store gear
  • Included seat is both comfortable and adjustable
  • Durable construction
Cons:
  • Heavier than other kayaks
  • Slower than other kayaks
  • No accessories included
The Ocean Kayak Scrambler 11 is a great choice for recreationalists and beginners alike. While it doesn’t offer features for the pros, it provides everything you need to get started on a new kayaking hobby. It features an extra-stable design that gives beginners more room to make mistakes without the consequences. This added stability in the bow and stern also makes it easier for you to get back into the kayak when you inevitably tip over in the water as you are learning. Learn More: Canoe vs Kayak Fishing Unfortunately, this option sacrifices speed for that added stability, meaning you definitely won’t be the fastest kayaker on the water. However, if you’re just starting out, that might be for the best until you get more comfortable paddling. This boat also includes a variety of convenience features that make it better to use while you’re out on the water. There’s a 6-inch dry storage compartment in the center console, along with webbing on either end of the kayak for more storage. It also features a cup holder molded directly into the hole right in front of the seat so you can bring your water bottle or other drinks with you out on the water. The Scrambler 11 doesn’t include any accessories other than the adjustable seat, which is very comfortable in its own right. If you don’t have a kayak paddle, you’ll need to purchase one before hitting the lake.

#2 Sun Dolphin Aruba – Best Value Kayak for Beginners

Pros:
  • More stability for higher ease of use
  • Cockpit is large and comfortable
  • Adjustable foot braces give you greater control
Cons:
  • Seat doesn’t adjust to your preferences
  • Seat bottom is not padded
  • Water tends to get in the cockpit on rough water
The Sun Dolphin Aruba offers high stability and ease of use for a low price. This is the perfect choice for beginners who don’t want to spend a ton on a new kayak, especially if they aren’t 100% sure paddling is the hobby for them. One of the biggest selling points for this option is the comfort that it offers. With an extra-large cockpit, kayakers of all shapes and sizes will feel comfortable while paddling. This is also helpful for those who don’t want to feel trapped in a sit-in kayak. The molded seat is comfortable, as well, with padding on the back of the seat and around the rim of the cockpit. While it doesn’t include padding on the bottom of the seat, the Aruba offers adjustable foot braces that give you more customizability and control. When it comes to learning how to kayak, it’s important that you get a boat that is easy to control. This is another area where the Sun Dolphin Aruba excels. Its hull design adds extra stability to the overall experience. While you do sacrifice some speed to get that extra stability, it’s well worth it for new users.

#3 Ocean Kayak Malibu Two – Best Tandem Kayak for Beginners

Pros:
  • Tandem style gives you room for two adults and a child
  • Can use solo if desired
  • Overlapping foot braces give you more comfort and control
Cons:
  • Longer length means heavier kayak
  • Minimal storage options
  • No included paddles
The Ocean Kayak Malibu Two is a tandem kayak that gives you more flexibility in the way get out on the water and enjoy the sport. While kayaking is traditionally a solo sport, it can be especially fun for beginners to paddle with friends and loved ones. This boat includes two seats, three different seating configurations and a 425 lb. weight capacity for a more versatile experience. Learn More: Best Place to Buy A Kayak If you’re using this kayak to its full seating capacity, you might find that you don’t have much room to store your gear. While there are two dry storage compartments on board, they can be harder to access with two people paddling, and there isn’t any webbing to store gear on top of the kayak with you. However, if you’re paddling solo, you’ll likely find that you have an abundance of space for your gear. You’ll just need to find a way to secure it. Since it’s 12 feet long, the Malibu Two is naturally more stable, and its overlapping foot wells help you gain more control over steering and overall movement. Just be aware that adding an extra person to the mix can cause more instability, especially if that person is brand new to kayaking.

#4 Intex Challenger K1 – Best Inflatable Kayak for Beginners

Pros:
  • Deflates for easier storage and transport
  • Super durable construction
  • Necessary accessories included (air pump, paddle, carrying bag)
Cons:
  • Included air pump is manual, not electric
  • No dry storage
  • Not as smooth or fast as hard kayaks
In an industry traditionally dominated by hardshell kayaks, the inflatable Intex Challenger K1 stands out. Inflatable kayaks are relatively new to the scene, but they offer an excellent starting point for beginners. This is one of the highest-rated inflatable kayaks on the market today. It’s affordable and easy to use, which makes it a great choice for those new to the paddling scene. One of the biggest draws about inflatable kayaks for beginners is the added convenience they offer. Being able to deflate your kayak and store it while only using a minimal amount of space means you don’t have to spend a ton of money on extra accessories like car roof racks. This kayak also includes all the necessary accessories to get you on the water, like the paddle, air pump and carrying bag. Unfortunately, the air pump is hand-operated, which can be tiring, so we recommend you look at purchase an electric pump that runs off batteries or a cigarette lighter. When you’re out on the water, you might find that the Intex Challenger K1 isn’t as smooth a ride as hard kayaks, but it’s stable and easy to use, which is most important to consider for beginners.

#5 Emotion Spitfire – Best Sit-on-Top Kayak for Beginners

Pros:
  • Built-in seat is extra comfortable and durable
  • Foot wells molded into the hull offer more comfort and control
  • Hull is designed for higher stability and better tracking
  • Lightweight
Cons:
  • Seat isn’t adjustable
  • No cup holder
  • Slower than other kayaks
The Emotion Spitfire was designed specifically for greater stability and tracking in the water, even though it means you lose some speed, which might be a good thing for beginners. The hull itself is also designed to be extra durable, so you don’t have to worry about ruining the boat if and when you run into things. This kayak excels when it comes to overall design. The built-in seat is comfortable and durable.  While it doesn’t adjust as much as other kayak seats, it still provides a good amount of comfort while you’re out in the water. The boat also includes molded foot wells at different intervals, which gives you more choices when it comes to your comfort. Storage is no problem on the Emotion Spitfire. With both cargo-net storage and dry storage, you should be able to store all your gear with ease. The only thing missing here is a cup holder. If you want to bring a drink with you, plan on holding it or putting it on the floor of the kayak, which isn’t advisable unless you want to watch your drink go overboard.

#6 Lifetime Rush 90 – Best Sit-In Kayak for Beginners

Pros:
  • Cockpit is comfortable and large
  • Seatback is adjustable
  • Hull is designed for added stability
  • Lightweight
Cons:
  • Onboard storage is lacking
  • No accessories included
  • Doesn’t do well on rough water
The Lifetime Rush 90 is great for young and old alike, with enough stability for younger paddlers and plenty of room for adults. Its hull is designed to give you more stability out on the water, especially as you get in and out of the boat. It also includes extra foam blocks built in for greater flotation. This can provide you more comfort and confidence while you’re kayaking. The cockpit itself is comfortable, even though the only padded part of the seat is the seat back, which is adjustable to your liking. If you find the seat bottom too hard, you can add your own seat, if desired. The Rush 90 performs best on calm lakes or slow-moving rivers. While it doesn’t take on much water during rough conditions, it has a hard time tracking and staying straight when it comes up against any kind of resistance. Beginners are probably best left to calmer waters, anyway, but if you start feeling more confident in your skills on rougher water, you might want to use a different kayak.

#7 Old Town Canoes & Kayaks Vapor 10 Angler – Best Fishing Kayak for Beginners

Pros:
  • Loaded with tons of cockpit features
  • Plenty of storage space
  • Incredible stability
Cons:
  • No included accessories
  • Drain hole not placed wellability
  • No dry storage
The Old Town Canoes & Kayaks Vapor 10 Angler is a fisher’s dream. It gets you closer to the fish without the high expenses that come with owning a full-sized boat. This kayak shines when it comes to all the added convenience it offers through the cockpit features. The cockpit itself is extra roomy, with tons of leg room and floor space for gear storage. It also includes a tray and cupholder. Storage is another area where this kayak shines. Directly behind the seat is a storage well. While it isn’t covered to provide dry storage, it’s easy enough to purchase a cover to protect your gear that can’t get wet. The kayak also includes webbing for storage directly on the hull. And if you’re worried about your fishing rods, you can place them in a rod holder on either side of your seat. When it comes to using the kayak, you won’t be unstable on the Vapor 10 Angler. Its hull provides added stability and tracking so you can maneuver easily through the water, even in rougher conditions. This is especially helpful for fishers when they need to move to a different area to follow where the fish are.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Black Friday Deals

Use coupon: THINKBLCKFRI

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Black Friday Deals

Use coupon: THINKBLCKFRI Note that while Lenovo is offering the older X1 Yoga 2nd Gen on sale in select “doorbuster” deal - we think it’s best to skip out given the price tag is still quite hefty for older hardware. The Black Friday promotion above is also essentially a “Cyber Monday” deal as well, because this 35% off ThinkPad X series coupon will run through December 5th - giving you plenty of time to do some comparison shopping. This same THINKBLCKFRI coupon also works on other ThinkPad models but the discounts are reduced. For example, the coupon works on the T480 and T480s for the same 35% off, but when used on the E and L series, the coupon only takes 30% off. When you use it on the P Series WorkStation, you’ll find them for around 30% to 35% off. Throughout the week, if you see a different coupon code listed on Lenovo, we encourage you to try it and compare it against this 35% off Black Friday deal for the ThinkPad X1 Carbon (and X1 Yoga). Occasionally Lenovo will run “doorbuster” deals that are comparable in discount, if not cheaper by $10 to $20 (hey, savings are savings). Pricing listed above are valid through December 5, 2018. Supplies and stock are limited for certain config. Please refer to shipping time frame before you purchsae as select models ships within 1 business day, while others may take 5-7 business days - especially for the customizable X1 machines.

Best Time To Buy a TV for a Big Size Deal

Looking for the best deals for the biggest TVs? You need to know when to start shopping for those large TV sizes, and when to act fast! The biggest TVs tend to have the most limited quantities and can sell out very quickly, so it’s important to be prepared. Let’s talk about shopping online and in the store, and the best times to do both!

Buying and Finding Television Deals Online

Buying online holds many attractions if you are short on time, or just want to make sure you find exactly the TV you want. Online shopping allows you to quickly search many different stores with much more inventory than the average brick-and-mortar stores (there’s a good reason that electronics purchasing has moved online en masse). If you have a very definite idea in mind for your TV size, it will probably be easier to find online. Plus, no waiting in line! Unless, of course, the website is down. Related: Best 4k TVs On The Market Note that sites like Amazon are very good about telling you how many of a specific product are left in stock, which can give you valuable clues about when to take action.

Cyber Monday Deals

Black Friday weekend will absolutely have some great online deals for TVs and it’s probably worth checking from Friday onwards. However, Cyber Monday is the big day to really buckle down and start searching for deals on sites like Amazon and Best Buy. Search for the TV section of their deals, and watch carefully. Amazon, in particular, tends to do short-term deals, and may change deals based on availability, so be prepared to buy quickly.

Prime Day

Prime Day is typically located in July. This is when Amazon conducts a broad series of deals across the massive site – although, of course, electronic products are still very popular. The nice thing about looking for a big TV during Prime Day is that there’s generally less competition than around the holidays, and you can relax a little as you search. But not too much! Prime Day specializes in lightning deals that last for a very short time, so it’s a “keep the webpage open all day” kind of activity. Related: Top 65 inch 4K TV

Around New Year

The New Year and following couple of months are generally great for buying a TV: The holiday rush of buyers has largely died down, but companies are still interested in selling – especially when it comes to their most impressive TVs. The reason is partly that of the Super Bowl, which gets everyone thinking about the best way to view sports, and partly a growing need to make room for new products.

Buying in the Store

Buying in the store has one big advantage for getting a big TV – you get to see it in person, which can help when making a final decision much easier. You can also take it home immediately (make sure you have enough room in your vehicle or are willing to pay extra for local shipping). Related: 4K vs 1080p However, there are also a couple of unique challenges when visiting the store. Yes, you have to get up early and wait in a long line filled with other impatient people, but keep in mind that any individual local store can only hold so much inventory, which means that the “first come, first serve” nature of the deals is particularly important. Many stores offer vouchers for big-ticket items like large TVs, which allow you to reserve a TV and pick it up later.

Black Friday

Black Friday is still king when it comes to in-store deals. You can look both in the local paper and online at the store’s general website to find out what sort of deals they are offering. If you find the exact TV you want at a low price, all you need is determination: Get to the store extra early in the morning (focus on opening hours) and be prepared to wait for hours if necessary.

Christmas and New Years

Yes, the holidays are also a good time to look in-store for deals…preferably after the Black Friday rush has died well away. While the best deals are probably on Black Friday, other great deals continue through New Years. The “Super Bowl” effect that we mentioned can be particularly powerful for stores, even larger department stores that may be trying to sell many different football bundles, including TVs.

Early Spring

Early spring is typically when the next shipments of the latest TV models go out to sellers. Brick-and-mortar stores have limited room to store inventory, which means they will be anxious to sell “last year’s” TVs at discounted prices. Fortunately, last year’s TVs are still an excellent buy, so use this opportunity to find great deals with relatively little shopping competition. Again, local ads are your friend here!

BenQ HT2550 4K Projector Review

BenQ’s HT2550 4K Projector uses the newer, smaller, more affordable, and slightly lower “resolution” 4K UHD DLP chip. I’ve spent a lot of time this past week watching HDTV and movies with it. This is a smaller projector that packs a lot of performance while giving you a great value proposition. This short throw dlp projector gives you a 100 inch Screen at Just 10 feet. While not as small as those LED pocket throw projectors, this 9.3 pound device is still very portable with an 11” x 14” footprint.

This Projector Packs In A Lot Of Features

Is it worth the $1,399.00 price tag? That’s a fair question. Read on to see what we thought of this small but powerful projector. Pros: 4K capable Picture quality beats most, right out of the box Light and portable Great price and value Cons: 5-watt speaker is obviously not ideal No onboard media player to allow you to go PC-free Could use more smart features

Overview

The HT2550 has 2,200 lumens of brightness, a 1.2:1 zoom lens, and 4K HDR capabilities. This projector works best in a home theater, or anywhere that you can make very  dark. It comes with a decent remote, and has tons of settings to tweak colors and get the perfect picture. You also get a 4,000-hour lamp life at full power, which can stretch to 8,000 in Smart Eco mode. It is also 3D capable. So this projector packs in a ton of great features. The 5-Watt speaker is adequate, but of course is no substitute for quality sound. Right out of the box the picture quality is better than most projectors. It will need some tweaking and there are plenty of settings to do this. Once fine-tuned, the colors, in general, appear accurate. They provide adjustments for all six primary and secondary colors, as well as Flesh Tone and Color Enhancer settings. Flesh tones looked very good.

Design

The HT2550 has a nice curved shape and is just small enough to be portable for movie night. The size allows it to sit almost anywhere. As far as the fan sound, don’t expect your typical loud projector. This one operates with more of a hum that won’t interfere with your movie. It isn’t silent, but it’s pretty close. It has only the basic inputs in back including Audio In, Audio Out, PC, HDMI 1, HDMI 2, Mini USB, USB, TYPE A, and 12 V TRIGGER. Which brings us to the only real disappointment with this projector. The fact that it lacks an onboard media player. This means that you have to be connected to the source, whether it’s your TV, PC or laptop. These days that feature is a must. I understand that it would have increased the price, but I think consumers would have been willing to pay. Despite this oversight, the HT2550 remains a great value since it is so feature-heavy otherwise.

Focus

Aside from the varied image settings, you’ll need to take some time tuning it for the best possible focus. Small movements of the focus dial can produce large effects on the screen. Once you get it just right, you won’t need to touch it again unless you move the projector.

Setup

Setup is very simple. Just plug the power cord and source in, and turn the projector on. You may want to adjust like the zoom and focus, then you are good to go.

Picture Quality

Just about everything we watched on this projector was detailed, crisp and clear, as long as you are in the appropriate environment and have your settings correct. BenQ really made it easy to watch a quality picture relatively hassle-free.

Movie Night Will Never Be The Same

Bottom Line The BenQ HT2550 projector is a pleasant experience. It boots up without much of a delay, operates more quietly than most and has so many settings you that get more control. It comes with a very useful remote, which is nice because that isn’t always the case. There’s 4k and 3D capability built right in. Whether it’s movies, sports or gaming, this short throw projector has everything that you need. In fact, it has more than you need. The menus are all very intuitive and easy to navigate as well. We wish it had an onboard media player, but we can’t really complain about the great value for the price.

Best Mesh Routers 2018

Despite only having broken out onto the home networking scene a few short years ago, mesh routers have quickly become the preferred way that thousands of users set up a wireless network in their home. But with so many options to choose from (and so many of them being released in just the past year, making it difficult to tell which models stand the test of time), which is the best mesh router in 2018? After 30 hours of research, we’ve concluded that the Linksys Velop Mesh Networking system is the best mesh router of 2018, but why? Well it’s no secret that for over 20 years Linksys (and their parent company Belkin) have produced some of the best routers in the business, including our #1 pick for best overall router the Linksys WRT3200 ACM. This is no different in the case of the Linksys Velop system, which combines ease of setup, powerful antennas, and a wide variety of features into a stylish and slim package.

3 Best Mesh Routers Compared 2018

#1 Linksys Velop - The Best Mesh Router for the Money

Pros
  • Functional, minimalist design
  • Decent performance at short range
  • Extremely user friendly
Cons
  • No 2.4GHz/5GHz channel separation
  • Slow speeds at distance
  • Ridiculously high price for the 3-pack
When we tested the Linksys Velop last year, we were impressed with many different aspects of its build, design, and setup process. Firstly, the design itself is just about as minimal and unassuming as you can get, fine to blend into the background of your home rather than trying to take center stage in everything. Sure the nodes might be a bit bigger and bulkier than what you would get out of similar mesh systems like the Tera Nova, but what the Velop lacks in slim profiles it more than makes up for in performance and power at its rates ranges. Speaking of power, this is where the Velop truly shines. Although we did struggle to maintain consistent performance at the outermost ranges of the rated distance extension, the onboard AC6600 MU-MIMO, 2.4GHz/5GHz radio pumped out more than enough bandwidth to handle the needs of a family of 10, if it needed to. Getting the Velop running was also a breeze thanks to the dozens of innovations that Linksys has made to the overall setup process, making it one of the most user-friendly and feature-rich routers we’ve tested to date. Related: Mesh WiFi vs Router - Pick the Right One But all that power and simplicity comes at a hefty cost: $299.99 for the two pack, and nearly $450 for the three pack, which means that if you’re looking for something cheaper with just a few less features we might recommend going with one of the other options listed below.

#2 AmpliFi HD - Top Performing Mesh Router

Pros
  • Clean, thoughtful design
  • Solid performance at all ranges
  • Intuitive setup and app UI
Cons
  • Software was missing many core features
  • HD model could be pricey for some
From the outside, nothing about the AmpliFi HD’s sleek, slim, and downright gorgeous looks would give you any hints about the beast of a router that’s hiding in wait underneath. The AmpliFi HD takes style and function to a whole new level with its small box main hub that features a tasteful (and helpful) onboard LCD display. This screen displays anything from the time to the current upload/download speeds you’re getting depending on your preference, and man, are those download speeds something to talk about. In our tests not only was the AmpliFi punching way above its weight class in its range, but its performance simply blew the doors off the place without even breaking a sweat. When left unchecked on the 5GHz band, the AmpliFi HD achieved scores of 534Mbps down/368Mbps up, which makes it one of the single fastest routers we’ve ever tested flat out. That said, one area where the AmpliFi HD was still lacking a bit was on the software side of things. The company has since added several of the features we dinged it for not having during our review (QoS, Parental Control, Guest Access), but they’re also slow to bring the router into the future with more nuanced options like port forwarding and DMZ options. All that said, unless you’re a hardcore geek for these types of configuration options the AmpliFi HD marries style, price, and power into an ultra-sleek package that anyone can set up in minutes.

#3 Google WiFi - Best Mesh Router for Stylish Homes

Pros
  • Seamless software integration
  • Simple setup
  • Decent range/power
Cons
  • Might be too expensive for some larger home owners
  • No web-based app
Like everything Google does (except Google+, we don’t talk about that anymore), the Google WiFi mesh networking system combines the best elements of its competitors while also adding its own dose of Google flair on top of everything. According to the company’s specs, just a single Google WiFi node (only $99) can cover a home as large as 1500 sq. ft, while adding two additional nodes on top of that ($299) will get you a whopping 4500 sq. ft of total coverage. Related: What is Mesh? Understand before you buy The Google WiFi app is both simple to use and configure, making it easy for the non-tech savvy users out there to completely setup their home network to work exactly the way they want it and protect their network from outside threats. Google WiFi also comes with a nifty extra feature called Network Assist, which automatically switches to the band and channel that’s most optimized for the device you’re trying to connect from. This means you’ll never be left getting less than optimal speeds compared to another mesh networking system, and have a huge jump over traditional routers attached to extenders or repeaters instead. The one (admittedly pretty small) drawback of the Google WiFi home mesh networking system is its lack of any sort of web-based interface. The entire routing network is handled and configured from Google’s own WiFi mobile application for iOS and Android, which means desktop or laptop warriors will be left out of luck if they want to change a new setting on the fly while they’re disconnected from the primary network at work, for example.

#4 Netgear Orbi - Top MU-MIMO Mesh Router

Pros
  • Alexa-integration support
  • Tri-band radio
  • High-bandwidth backhaul
Cons
  • Less nodes might mean less coverage depending on your layout
  • A bit bulkier than other units
The Netgear Orbi is the long-awaited mesh system released by one of the biggest networking giants in the world, and for the most part, the wait was well worth it. Using just two satellite nodes the Netgear Orbi can cover homes as large as 5000 sq. ft, which gives it the best bang for the buck power/range value of any router on this list. Netgear also brings the mesh system into the 21st century with its Alexa integration that lets you control every aspect of your home wireless networking experience just with your voice. There’s nothing quite like yelling out “Alexa, kick my kids off the internet for the night” and having the parental controls boot up in a few seconds seemingly almost by magic. There’s also a lot to be said about the tri-band high-bandwidth backhaul technology included with the Orbi, which as far as we can tell, is unique to Netgear’s mesh networking system alone. This configuration guarantees that your devices never drop connection or lose power depending on where they’re connecting from in the house, which feeds into the MU-MIMO capability to provide a truly one-of-a-kind browsing, streaming, and downloading experience. The only drawback that bears mentioning here is the bulkiness of the Orbi units, which, when stacked against other options like the Plume below can seem downright massive by comparison.

#5 Plume SuperPod - Longest Range

Pros
  • Small, discreet pods
  • Large number of nodes included in the default package
  • Innovative pricing system if purchased through the company’s website
  • Gorgeous design
Cons
  • Not as much speed throughput as other options on this list
  • Subscription plan may put some users off
While most mesh networking options on this list might include two, maybe three nodes per system by default (with the option to add additional nodes on for a price), the Plume SuperPods have gone with the “more is more” ethos, including six pods in your basic Plume kit. This means that you can truly customize your mesh networking experience, throwing a pod in just about every room where you plan on browsing the internet and then some. Probably the single best part about this approach (aside from the increased, even coverage of the signal) is that if you’re a gamer or heavy streamer, every pod also comes with the option to plug your device into the pod using a direct Ethernet hookup. For gamers this means less latency, less dropped packets, and more throughput overall when you’re in the heat of battle and need every bit of ping you can muster in the moment. Not only that, but Plume has also made strides to make its system more affordable, offering a monthly subscription plan which subsidizes the cost of the hardware. But it’s not all good. The subscription plan is required if you want to access features such as parental controls and QoS, which means that no matter what, even if you buy all the hardware up front for the full cost, you won’t be able to unlock the Plume’s full potential unless you pony up for an extra fee each month.

#6 Tenda Nova - Best Cheap Mesh Networking System

Pros
  • Super cheap price of entry
  • Decent performance for the cost
  • Sleek design
Cons
  • Power isn’t great
  • Coverage could be better
If there’s one trend you might have already noticed on this list, it’s that no matter which mesh networking system you decide to go with, you should expect to spend in the upper $200-$500 range to get the full experience of everything that mesh routing has to offer. Not so with the Tenda Nova kit, which brings the cost of a three-node system down to an almost suspiciously low $99 out the door. Too good to be true? Well, kind of. Sure the Tenda Nova doesn’t have all the latest tech and suffers from the dreaded “backhaul” traffic problem thanks to its limited radio (where the speed of the extended nodes can suffer if the first node is hogging all the available bandwidth), but all that said the system does still put out a respectable amount of zip when used under the most optimal conditions. All in all we can’t fault the Nova Tenda for what it’s lacking when you get a gander at that price point. This system undercuts even the closest competition by a factor of almost half, which means that if you’re shopping for a mesh networking solution on a budget and need something that’ll work in a pinch, there’s nowhere else to go except with Nova.

#7 TP-Link Deco - Best Mesh Network Under $200

Pros
  • Dedicated backhaul-channel enabled
  • MU-MIMO enabled
  • Comprehensive antivirus/firewall options
  • Cheap
Cons
  • A bit slower than the competition
It should come as no surprise that TP-Link, the dark horse of the routing industry over the past few years, would bring their same flair for power, performance, and feature-rich production to its newest and best mesh networking system to date. The TP-Link Deco takes all the best elements of routers the company has released in previous years and combines them all into a subversively powerful and feature-rich package. Whether it’s the dedicated backhaul-channel support thanks to the tri-band radio or the slew of onboard parental control, QoS, and firewall options, just about everything you could possibly want out of a router and a mesh system is ready to go in the Deco - all at a price that just skates under the $200 mark if you go with the available 2-node option.

#8 Eero Home WiFi System - Best Mesh Router for Easy Setup

Pros
  • Sleek design
  • Low profile external nodes
  • Simple to set up and use
Cons
  • Pricey for what you get
  • Coverage could be better for the cost
Above all else, the eero Home WiFi system holds the title of being one of the very first mesh networking systems to market, and has still managed to maintain its place as one of the best ever since. Originally launched as a Kickstarter project by a tech geek who was tired of troubleshooting his family’s WiFi problems, this little mesh networking system launched an entire industry that it continues to dominate both in sales and in innovation. The eero comes with most of the standard features we’ve come to expect out of mesh networking systems like MU-MIMO and comprehensive configuration settings in the eero app, but what it gains on these fronts it loses a bit of ground when you consider the price. At $400 the eero Beacon system is one of the most expensive systems on this list, and the coverage isn’t as impressive as what you’d get with smaller systems like the Orbi. That said, if you want one of the best mesh routers on shelves today, you simply can’t go wrong with the original that helped to define the entire genre that followed it.

What is a Mesh Router?

A mesh router is a new type of networking hardware that replaces traditional routers with a series of smaller, often much more stylish “nodes” which make up a “mesh” of coverage around your home. Mesh networking works by creating an ad-hoc link that stretches from node to node, removing the need for additional accessories like range extenders and routing repeaters to get a powerful and consistent signal to every area of your home completely unimpeded. Mesh systems are often preferred by customers with larger homes or those who want to browse in areas that can present challenges for less powerful traditional routers. This includes browsing in areas like your backyard, basement, or attic, and can also make it easier to get a more consistent signal to all of your devices at once no matter where you’re trying to surf from in the home.

How Much Should You Expect to Spend on a Mesh Router?

The one drawback that most of you’ve probably already noticed from the list above is that when compared against traditional routers, mesh networking systems can cost quite a bit more out of pocket. This is because physically you’re paying for more hardware, with most mesh systems including at least two nodes and many going up to five nodes to get complete coverage around your home. Because of this, you should expect to spend at least $50 - $200 more than you would for a competing traditional router, though in our opinion if you live in a large home there’s simply no better way to go for getting the most out of your local wireless network. Some options like the Tenda Nova are still relatively affordable with each three pack costing just a little under $100, though this can quickly add up when you need more than three nodes to get complete range and power coverage. Comparatively other options like the eero Pro will set you back a staggering $500 for the same three pack, and it’s in situations like these where you really need to break down all the features you’re looking for and if the Tenda Nova covers them all, consider going that route instead.

Mesh Router Buyers Guide

Below are the top features you should look for in a mesh router.

2.4GHz and 5GHz

  • This is the big one. Not all mesh systems are made alike, and some may only feature a single bandwidth for you to stream and download your favorite content on.
  • The entire point of buying a mesh system is to get the absolute most range and power possible out of every device you own, which means that the system you go with needs to support dual-band access in order to build the most complete coverage around your home.
  • Some mesh systems break down the setup

MU-MIMO

  • This is a newer feature that’s only been added to most routers (traditional and mesh) within the past few years, but ever since crashing onto the scene it’s become a near essential.
  • It works like this: in non MU-MIMO routers every packet of data is sent to every device attached to the network one at a time in very, very rapid succession. While this generally is fine if everyone is in different parts of the house, where it starts to slow everything down is if, for example, the whole family is in the living room or kitchen and are all browsing from their devices at the same time.
  • MU-MIMO, or “Multiple-In, Multiple-Out” fixes this problem with some clever directional routing techniques that stream a consistent number of packets to every device simultaneously. This can be vital if you’re say, trying to stream a movie on Netflix from your Smart TV while you and your kids are on your phones/tablets at the same time all gathered on the same couch.

High Bandwidth Rating

  • As broadband speeds continue to increase around the globe, you’ll want to make sure you have a router that’s both future-proof and can handle the output of a full family all streaming, gaming, and downloading at the same time.
  • Most of the benefits that you gain from mesh router ultimately come down to how much bandwidth it can handle, especially in the case of larger families who find themselves at their heaviest periods of usage all at the same time (3-10PM).

Solid Onboard Software/Easy Setup

  • One of the main reasons why most consumers would want to choose a mesh routing system over a traditional router or router+range extender is ease of setup and a solid onboard software option.
  • Mesh networks make it simple (sometimes even too much so) to get your home network up and running in 20 minutes or less. This is generally accomplished through mobile apps that connect to the main hub via local ad-hoc WiFi or Bluetooth, and will let you configure everything you need on the router directly from your preferred device without having to plug in a laptop or desktop via Ethernet to set things up properly.
  • This section also covers the onboard features of a mesh system. Some mesh routers are (as we mentioned before) almost too simplistic, and don’t carry many of the more advanced configuration options we’ve come to expect on routers like parental controls, QoS settings, port forwarding and more. Be sure that when you scan the feature set of the router you plan to buy that it also includes everything you want in this space, or at least a promise from the company that they plan to patch those features in within six months of your purchase.

Stylish Design

  • Another major reason that some customers prefer to go with a mesh routing system over a traditional router (even if they live in smaller homes that would be perfectly fine with a standard router), is style.
  • Mesh routers do away with the big blocky routers of yesteryear with their huge, gaudy antennas sticking off all sides thanks to the technology that makes the whole thing work.
  • Because mesh systems don’t need to use external routers and spread the load of the work to multiple units, these routers can be significantly more stylish and well-designed than their larger counterparts. Some options like the AmpliFi HD and Google Home are quite simply the most beautiful, well-designed routers we’ve ever seen, traditional or otherwise.
Enough Range to Cover Your Whole Home
  • Finally, we come to the issue of range. As we spoke about before, you’ll want to be sure that you’re carefully checking the manufacturer’s website and spec list to build the perfect mesh system that’s custom-tailored to your home and layout.
  • Not only that, you’ll also want to maximize what you get for your money. This means pushing every node in the network to its absolute limit of range from the main hub, while also giving just enough slack to prevent signal drops and power loss.
  • The range factor will ultimately come down to your budget, your home size, and the base power rating of the mesh networking system you choose from the list above.
[/ft_alert]

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not Buying Enough Antennas: Although it can be tempting to skimp on the cost of your mesh routing system by only buying the most minimal options available from the manufacturer, we recommend doing a bit of research beforehand and see what the company recommends for your size home. This can also change depending on your use case (browsing outside, in a basement, in a house with 3+ floors, etc), so be sure to read all the specs and how much range you can expect to get out of each antenna before rolling through the checkout.
  • Going With Mesh Routers When a Standard Router Will Do: Even though it might be tempting to go exclusively with a mesh routing system since they’re the newest hottest product on the block of home networking, realistically they’re only designed for a specific subset of the consumer market. This includes users who have large homes or struggle to maintain a reliable signal throughout their house when they move from one end to the next, but may not make as much sense for those living in apartments. Apartments and smaller homes (generally those under 2500 sq. ft) can be serviced fairly well by a standard router (which can cost significantly less than a mesh router), but of course you may also want something that’s less obtrusive and more stylish than a traditional router, which is where a mesh system might still be the better choice.
  • Spending Too Much: Another common mistake that first-time mesh router buyers might make is pretty much the opposite of not buying enough antennas – buying too many! Again, you’ll be able to find the ratings for specific mesh systems on the manufacturer’s websites that will effectively break down exactly what kind of setup you’ll need to cover your specific house layout and device count.
